Opening titles are shown at the beginning of a movie or withing the first 5 minutes of a TV show. They can either be shown by themselves in an opening or along side the actually film. Opening titles are uses to inform us about the most important people who created the film like the distribution company, production company and usually well known actors. Opening titles are a chance to grab the audiences attention as they can be made in to a mini movie to intrigue or confuse the audience wanting more information.
All opening have certain conventions they will follow which is beneficial to all people in contribution to the film and it displays their information. Blur Studio do this quite well along side slow motion action during the modern action film Dead pool. Making the opening sequences into an almost art style is not new however, Alfred Hitchcock did a lot of experimental stuff with openings to grab his audiences attention.
The first of many conventions for openings is the distribution and production companies. Because distribution requires more money it is usually shown in the credits before the production company. If the movie has a cretin star or director however it is easier for it to be distributed as the recognised the name of the actor/director for their experience in work.
Another convention is the cast names and directors name. Usually you'll see the directors name by it's self as they are seen as an highly important person. This happens the same with the cast, main members of the cast are shown individually whilst the more unknown or co-actors share the screen as they are lesson or of more insignificant importance. If there is a very renown name i.e. Chris Hemsworth, their name will be shown first as they would have helped in getting and audience for the movie just by having a reputation. And the title of the film can fall in a variety of places, sometimes at the front and sometimes at the end but it's really up to the persons in charge of the opening titles.
